1. 离你而去的人

知道死亡总是在将来的某一刻，就能好好把握现在能做好的..
知道这些，就不必勉强为难自己，心放开了，就什么都好了..

心放淡一点，再淡一点，没有那么多给自己设置的心结，心境也就平和了..

Levine, Ph.D., a psychologist and the author of Best Friends Forever: Surviving a Breakup With Your Best Friend ($16, amazon.com). “You may be the oldest sibling in your family and are used to taking care of others. You exude confidence and have good judgment, so your friends trust you and value your opinions.” Adds Jeanne Martinet, author of Life Is Friends: A Complete Guide to the Lost Art of Connecting in Person($20, amazon.com), “You’re basically giving out love, and who doesn’t love that kind of friend?”

But beware of people who take advantage of your generous spirit. “Unfortunately, you often attract a fair share of needy friends who are constantly plagued by problems and looking for support,” says Levine, who writes about friends at TheFriendshipBlog.com. “You need to set boundaries so you aren’t overwhelmed by their problems.”

Also, if you’re really entrenched in the mothering role, you may not be getting what you need, points out Paul. “And it can be hard to flip that.”

Let your friends give you a hand every now and then. “Force yourself to ask other people for advice and to tell people about your problems,” says Martinet. “People like to help their friends, so allow your friends to help you.”

And at a party, don’t become so engrossed in intimate conversation that you forget to have fun. “Your instinct may be to ask questions of the other person,” says Martinet. “That’s fine, but you also need to force yourself to make observations—‘Doesn’t the hostess look nice?’ ‘Can you believe this weather?’ These keep the conversation going without keeping the focus entirely on the other person.”

　　罗威刚要出门，接到一个电话：“罗威啊，我是李台阳。好，我马上就过来。”
罗威想：和李台阳这么多年没联系了，自己刚升职，莫不是……
门铃响了，门开处，伸进一个乱蓬蓬的脑袋，一只黑色的塑料袋子“嗵”地放在地板上。
罗威说：“是台阳啊，快请进。”
坐在沙发上，罗威递烟给李台阳。李台阳抽出一支，凑在鼻子上闻闻，说：“罗威，你混得不错啊。”
“听说你要来，特地去超市买的。”罗威用打火机给他点烟。
李台阳嘻嘻一笑，放下烟，说：“那么破费干吗？我早戒了，那东西耗钱。”
罗威说：“那就吃些水果吧。”
李台阳也不客气，抓了个苹果，边吃边环顾房子，说：“你这房子够气派啊。”
罗威说：“我是‘负翁’一个，现在每月还在还房贷呢。”
李台阳说：“你们夫妻俩都是白领阶层，这钱来得容易，债也还得快。哪像我们，能吃饱饭，不生病，孩子上得起学，就上上大吉了。”
罗威想，这像是要借钱的开场白吧。他说：“是啊，现在，谁都活得不容易。”
李台阳说：“你真是身在福中不知福。我打小就知道，你将来肯定比我活得有出息。”
罗威说：“哪里哪里，也是混口饭吃吧。”
李台阳正色道：“你这样说就不对了，人要知足，对吧？”然后，又开起玩笑：“你可不要犯错误啊。”
两人聊起童年时的事儿，说到小时候的邻居谁离婚了，谁出国了，谁还是那么一副臭脾气，一聊聊到快中午，李台阳还是没说他来的目的。
罗威说：“台阳，咱们去外面馆子吃吧，边吃边聊。”
李台阳说：“今天肯定不吃了，我答应老婆回家吃饭的，”仍然继续刚才的话题。
罗威见他一直不提正事，又没有走的意思，想到自己下午还有个会，又不好意思催促，心里在便有些七上八下起来，心想可能李台阳不好意思自己提出来，便说：“台阳，你还在摆地摊吗？不如找个固定的工作，做保安什么的，收入也比那强啊。”
李台阳说：“我不喜欢做保安，我倒是想过自己租个门面，这样总比被城管赶来赶去强。”
罗威说：“城管大队的人我倒是认识，你今后有什么麻烦的话，我可以帮忙。”
李台阳拍了一下罗威的肩膀，说：“兄弟，有你这句话，说明我没有白惦记你。十多年了啊，你还是这般热心肠。好，我高兴，真是高兴啊。”边说边站了起来。
罗威说：“吃了饭再走。”
“老婆还在家等着我呢。好，我走了啊。”
听着李台阳“嗵嗵”的脚步声一路下去，罗威低头看了看地板上的黑袋子，打开来一看，原来是自己小时候最喜欢吃的鱼籽干。
罗威不知说啥好，忽然觉得自己特俗。
楼梯口又传来“嗵嗵”的脚步声，好像是李台阳的。罗威想：可能刚才他没勇气说出口，就冲这一袋子鱼籽干，不管他提啥要求，自己一定想办法。
打开门，果然是李台阳，尴尬的脸上都是亮晶晶的汗珠。他不好意思地说：“你们这个小区像个迷宫，我绕来绕去总找不到大门。”
罗威说“瞧我这粗心，应该陪你下楼去的。”说着，便和李台阳下了楼。走到楼下，李台阳去开自行车锁，那辆车和李台阳一般灰不溜秋、尘头垢面。
罗威问：“你是骑车来的？”他知道李台阳住在西城，从那骑车到他这儿，起码要一个小时。
李台阳说：“是啊，骑惯了。”
罗威说：“台阳，你有啥困难只管开口，我能帮的一定帮你。”
李台阳说：“没啥事，就想来看看你。”
罗威说：“多年咱都没联系了，你今天上门一定有事。你只管说，别开不了口。”
李台阳看看罗威，似下了决心说：“我说出来你可别生气。”
见罗威点头，李台阳说：“我昨晚做了一个梦，梦见你得了重病，很多人都围着你哭。这一醒来，我心里就七上八下的，连地摊都不想摆了。知道你混得好，我也不想打搅你了。可这梦搅得我难受，连我老婆都催我来看看你，看你气色这么好，我就放心了。唉，梦呗，我这人还真迷信。”
罗威的眼睛红了，他一把抱住李台阳，说：“兄弟。”

生命中总有许多来来往往的人，就像我们走路时马路上那些过客，有与我们背道而行的，也有与我们走向同一个方向的。

　　与我们背道而行的，也许我们转瞬即忘，岁月的风，会把他们吹到我们记忆的边缘，甚至是我们的记忆之外。

　　也许，在生命中的某一天里，我们也还会偶尔地想起一些模糊的影子来，但也只是偶尔地想一下而已，他们在我们身后，已离我们越来越远。即使他们因为某些原因又重新折回来，可因为我们已相隔得太远了，也早已无法追得上。

　　那些与我们同行的，有的与我们擦肩而过，有的也许会陪我们走一段距离。但时间都不会太长，人生的道路上岔道太多，在每一个路口，我们的选择都会不同。你选择了这条路，他选择了那条路，于是，只有分手。新的道路上，当然还会有新的同行者，可也同样还会有新的岔路口。

　　正是因为有了友情，我们才能感受到人与人之间的温馨。我们的内心仿佛是一只因常常积满忧虑和无奈而倍感沉重的杯子，只有那些为了友情而伸给我们的双手，才愿意真诚的为我们倒空这只杯子，还她快慰和轻松。

看的是文章，读的却是成长

一、看的是书，读的却是世界；沏的是茶，尝的却是生活；斟的是酒，品的却是艰辛；人生就像一张有去无回的单车票，没有彩排。每一场都是现场直播。把握好每次演出便是最好的珍惜。将生活中点滴的往事细细回味，伤心时的泪、开心时的醉，都是因追求而可贵。日落不是岁月的过，风起不是树林的错。只要爱过等过付出过，天堂里的笑声就不是传说。

　　二、世界没有悲剧和喜剧之分，如果你能从悲剧中走出来，那就是喜剧，如果你沉缅于喜剧之中，那它就是悲剧。如果你只是等待，发生的事情只会是你变老了。人生的意义不在于拿一手好牌，而在于打好一手坏牌。

　　三、花儿不为谁开，也可以为自己开，世界不为谁存在，也可以为自己存在。花未全开，月未圆。这是人间最好的境界，花一旦全开，马上就要凋谢了，月一旦全圆，马上就要缺损了。而未全开未全圆，仍使你的心有所期待，有所憧憬。

　　四、选择一个朋友，就是选择一种生活方式。自己修身养性是交到好朋友的前提，等于给自己打开了最友善的世界。能够让自己的人生具有光彩。真正的朋友不是在一起有聊不完的话，而是即使不说一句话也不觉得尴尬。

　　五、这世上有两样东西是别人抢不走的：一是藏在心中的梦想，二是读进大脑的书。

　　九、"神于天，圣于地"是中国人的人格理想：既有一片理想主义的天空，可以自由翱翔不妥协于现实世界上很多规则与障碍；又有脚踏实地的能力，能够在这个大地上进行他行为的拓展。

　　十、成熟不是人的心变老，是泪在打转还能微笑。走得最急的，都是最美的风景；伤得最深的，也总是那些最真的感情。收拾起心情，继续走吧，错过花，你将收获雨，错过雨，你会遇到彩虹。

无需太多

那天偶过花店，他察觉到我对黄玫瑰的喜爱，第二天便送了一束给我。

可不知怎的，我老想着花店橱窗里的那一朵，总觉得这一束不如那一朵清丽可人。

有一天，我俏皮地问他：“你真的爱我吗？”其实，只要他讲一个“爱” 字，我就满足了，可他不仅说“爱”，且滔滔不绝地说了许多爱的理由，听着，听着，我心不在焉了……

　　无需要太多！人，有时真的并不是非要得到或听到许多的。一朵花，一片绿叶，一个会心的微笑，一缕柔情，一点真心，一句关切的问候，一声同情的惋惜，便可使我们如品香茗、似饮甘醇了。

只要在我心身透支时，有一双温暖的手向我伸出，我便能借助这一臂之力走出困境；

只要在我苦恼时，有一位善解人意的朋友在我身边，我就能吐出所有心事求得心灵上的舒展；

只要在我忧郁时，天边有一抹淡淡的斜阳，便能照亮我那双迷茫的眼睛。

　　只要……

　　不必希求太多——向朋友、向爱情，尤其是向生活。是否记得？我们曾经多么专注地设计美妙的未来，我们是如何细致地描绘多彩的前途，然而，尽管我们是那样固执、那样虔诚、那样坚韧地等待，可生活却以我们全然没有料到的另一种面目呈现于面前。

尽力而为还不够

在美国西雅图的一所著名教堂里，有一位德高望重的牧师――戴尔·泰勒。有一天，他向教会学校一个班的学生们先讲了下面这个故事。
那年冬天，猎人带着猎狗去打猎。猎人一枪击中了一只兔子的后腿，受伤的兔子拼命地逃生，猎狗在其后穷追不舍。可是追了一阵子，兔子跑得越来越远了。猎狗知道实在是追不上了，只好悻悻地回到猎人身边。猎人气急败坏地说：“你真没用，连一只受伤的兔子都追不到！”
猎狗听了很不服气地辩解道：“我已经尽力而为了呀！”
再说兔子带着枪伤成功地逃生回家了，兄弟们都围过来惊讶地问它：“那只猎狗很凶呀，你又带了伤，是怎么甩掉它的呢？”
兔子说：“它是尽力而为，我是竭尽全力呀！它没追上我，最多挨一顿骂，而我若不竭尽全力地跑，可就没命了呀！”
泰勒牧师讲完故事之后，又向全班郑重其事地承诺：谁要是能背出《圣经·马太福音》中第五章到第七章的全部内容，他就邀请谁去西雅图的“太空针”高塔餐厅参加免费聚餐会。
《圣经·马太福音》中第五章到第七章的全部内容有几万字，而且不押韵，要背诵其全文无疑有相当大的难度。尽管参加免费聚餐会是许多学生梦寐以求的事情，但是几乎所有的人都浅尝则止，望而却步了。
几天后，班中一个11岁的男孩，胸有成竹地站在泰勒牧师的面前，从头到尾地按要求背诵下来，竟然一字不漏，没出一点差错，而且到了最后，简直成了声情并茂的朗诵。
泰勒牧师比别人更清楚，就是在成年的信徒中，能背诵这些篇幅的人也是罕见的，何况是一个孩子。泰勒牧师在赞叹男孩那惊人记忆力的同时，不禁好奇地问：“你为什么能背下这么长的文字呢？”
这个男孩不假思索地回答道：“我竭尽全力。”
16年后，这个男孩成了世界著名软件公司的老板。他就是比尔·盖茨。
泰勒牧师讲的故事和比尔·盖茨的成功背诵对人很有启示：每个人都有极大的潜能。正如心理学家所指出的，一般人的潜能只开发了2－8左右，像爱因斯坦那样伟大的大科学家，也只开发了12左右。一个人如果开发了50的潜能，就可以背诵400本教科书，可以学完十几所大学的课程，还可以掌握二十来种不同国家的语言。这就是说，我们还有90的潜能还处于沉睡状态。谁要想出类拔萃、创造奇迹，仅仅做到尽力而为还远远不够，必须竭尽全力才行

写给我们这些20来岁的人

　　如果你已经过了20岁但还不到25岁的话，你必须找到除了爱情之外，能够使你用双脚坚强站在大地上的东西。你要找到谋生的方式。现在考虑不晚了。
我从来不以为学历有什么重要，天才都不是科班，但，不是科班，连龙套都跑不了。
你必须把那些浮如飘絮的思绪，渐渐转化为清晰的思路和简单的文字。华丽和漂浮都不易长久。你要知道，给予文字阅读快感不够的，内容，思想，境界，灵魂，精神和智慧，这些才重要。不要多看那些和你一个路数的女作家的文字。不要琐碎，无病呻吟。不要想到什么就写。不要流连于小感伤和小感动。
我要你相信温暖，美好，信任，尊严，坚强这些老掉牙的字眼。
我不要你颓废，空虚，迷茫，糟践自己，伤害别人。我不要你把自己处理得一团糟。节制自己的感情并且珍惜它，明白这种感情不是任何人都能要。
体验生活，是另外一回事，并不意味着堕落和放纵。千万不要认同那些伪装的酷和另类。他们是无事可做的人找出来放任自己无事可做的借口，真正的酷是在内心。你要有强大的内心。
要有任凭时间流逝，不会磨折和屈服的信念。不是因为在学校的象牙塔中，才说出我爱世界这样的话，是知道外面的黑，脏，丑陋之后，还要说出这样的话。
好好去爱，去生活。青春如此短暂，不要叹老。偶尔可以停下来休息，但是别蹲下来张望。走了一条路的时候，记得别回头看。时不时问问自己，自己在干嘛?
伤心和委屈的时候，要嚎啕大哭。哭完洗完脸，拍拍自己的脸，挤出一个微笑给自己看。不要揉，否则第二天早上会眼睛肿。
给自己一个远大的前程和目标。记得常常仰望天空。记住仰望天空的时候也看看脚下。
任何时候，任何人问你，有过多少次恋爱，答案是两次。一次是他爱我，我不爱他。一次是我爱他，他不爱我。好的爱情永远在下一次。别给同一个人两次伤害你的机会。
不要与浪子，文艺青年交往，别和没心没肺的人在一起，别和没有正当职业混日子的人在一起。
别把犯贱当真爱。一个人作践自己来取悦你的时候，千万不要因此感动。一个男人的烟头烫在他身上，下一个就可能烫在你身上。同样的，当这个女人的刀片割断她的手腕，下次就可能割断你的。
千万别相信一个不准备将你介绍给他的朋友圈子的男人。一个女人只肯喊你“宝贝”的时候，坚持要她喊你的名字，因为你是男人。一个男人或者女人不再来找你的时候，就不要再去找他或者她。不要相信在恋爱上用手段的人。分手时不要口出恶言。吸取教训，但不要后悔。后悔没有用。
别去做撕照片，烧信，撕日记这样一类三流爱情电视剧中才有人干的事。相信爱情。相信好男人和好女人还存在，还未婚，还在茫茫人海中寻觅你。别说“男人（或者女人）没一个好东西”，这样使别人误以为你阅人无数。
爱物质，适当地。永远知道精神更重要。比起那些名表，名牌，时装，更加美丽的是勤奋而有朝气的你自己。如果你20岁以后所花的每一分钱还都是伸手向父母亲人要来的，那你的满身名牌就只能衬托出你的无耻。别以为穿上名牌你就有品位，要知道如果没有真正的内涵，骡子配上金鞍也不会变成骏马。你还年轻，先不说开始你的事业，开创你的未来，但你已经成年，至少也要让自己不再成为父母的负担，让父母看到20年辛苦养育的希望。
无所事事只会把你变成一个废物，一个被所有其他人鄙夷的废物，因为这样的你是一个不折不扣的寄生虫。别以为弄个怪异的发型，穿上不男不女的衣服，喷上刺鼻的香水，别人就会注重你，要明白那样招来的眼光就是别人在看一只与众不同的猴子。许多有教养的人对另类的你的反感并不写在脸上，但这种反感确凿无疑肯定会给你带来极其不利的后果。
别瞧不起劳动人民。不要为劳动羞耻。土地不脏，汗味不难闻。请尊重那些似乎生活状况不如你，但仍然用自己的双手诚实劳动养家糊口的人，因为这样才是尊重自己。永远体恤那些生活在底层的人们，因为我们的亲人就是在这些人群中。我们不娇贵。我们必须能够自己养活自己，这是你的尊严所在。
不要小看一分钱。不妨自己去挣挣看。做人有时要强悍一点，被欺负的时候，一定要讨回来！但是不要记恨。

生活有进有退输什么也不能输了心情

1 打扫心灵
　　很多人都喜欢房子清扫过后焕然一新的感觉。同样，理完发的感觉也十分美好，因为多余的东西去除了。
　　儿童是快乐的，因为他没有过多的心事，也没有不必要的忧虑。而成人则不同，我们的生命中有太多的积压物和太多想像出来的复杂以及一些扩大了的悲痛。
　　用电脑的人都知道，回收站是需要经常清空的，否则会占用过多的空间，影响计算机的运转速度。人的头脑也是。你不能什么都扔掉，你也不能什么都留着。聪明的人是善于取舍的人，是适时取舍的人。有太多心事的人走不快，完全没有心事的人又多半缺乏理性。
    而生命的难度也正在于此，你要不断清扫和放弃一些东西，因为“生命里填塞的东西愈少，就愈能发挥潜能”。记得一部戏里，一个人对主人公说：“走吧，不要回头，做不好不要回来。”他的意思是让他离开这里，是希望不要让过去拖累他。
　　清扫心灵是一种挣扎与奋斗的过程。人生是一个不断挥手的旅程，少年要告别家乡，伤心人要告别伤心地，雄鹰要告别安逸，快乐要告别悲伤。没有告别，就没有成长，要坚强，就要勇于转身，离别是为了更好地相聚。
2 放弃也是一种宽容
　　一个人就像一个国家一样，没有宽容便没有成长。在一切成功要素中，胸怀是第一位，或者也可以说宽容是第一位的。
　　有的时候，放弃进攻的言词，放弃愤怒的冲动，放弃报复的渴望，本身就是一种宽容。
    聪明的人也经常要放弃解释。在许多人看来，解释就是掩饰。李敖说得好：有时解释是不必要的敌人不信你的解释，朋友无须你的解释。许多事情根本就无须解释，天不晴有时就是因为雨没下透，下透了就好了。
　成功的人不要怕挨骂，因为只要你做事，就会出错，就会触动一些人，就会引起某些人的不满。事实上，能有50%的人赞成你就很不错了，世上极少有百分之百的事情，越美的东东西越容易打碎。要锻炼自己正确对待反对的能力，要勇敢地主动去征询反对意见。不要抱怨反对者，他完全可以有他的看法，这是他的自由，与你无关。不必费力气去和他争辩，赶路要紧。
3 时间产生美
　　几乎每个人都有自己的伤心地，所以我们并不奇怪，一些看起来很重要的地方，比如故乡、母校、原单位、初恋现场，却并不见得有很多人踊跃地回去，那是因为有太多的故事在里面，有太多的沉重在原地。眼不见，心不烦。
　　而当一切都可以看开时，往往也是没有什么可以失去的时候，时间把往事都冲淡了，只留下了美好的记忆，青春的记忆，成长的记忆，拼搏的记忆，还有擦肩而过的灿烂笑容和寂寞黑夜里的温暖烛光。我参加和采访过许多个校庆，映入我眼帘最多的慈祥的白发和久别重逢的泪水涟涟。岁月可以软化最铁硬的心灵。
　　社会心理学家告诉我们，嫉妒产生于相近的业界和区域，冲突往往源自利益的纠缠。“一切生物都暴露在剧烈的斗争之中”，因为一切生物都有高速率增加的倾向，在资源有限的情况下，生存斗争是不可避免的。而最剧烈的斗争，差不多总是发生在同种的个体之间，因为它们居住在同一地域，需要同样食料，遭受同样威胁。一些紧张关系的缓和需要时间和距离，离得远了，感觉无关紧要了，也便放得开了。远远地看去，许多事物都是很美的。　
　所以我们不必为不能解决的问题沮丧，再不能解决的问题，也会在时间的洪流里消失。敌意也罢，误解也罢，轻视也罢，矛盾也罢，都会随着时间的推移而淡淡化开，时间可以使沧海变成桑田。
4 引退的美学
　　再好的眼睛，注视一件事物久了都会疲劳的，人的体力、情绪和智力周期决定了一个人无法永远留在高潮，在一个生命周期内，人不可避免地要走向低潮。一年便是一个生命周期。
　　“及时而漂亮的撤退与漂亮的进攻同样重要。辅佐某人久了，连幸运女神也会累的”。重要的不是到场时博得别人的喝彩，而是离开时别人对你的想念。
　　引退的美学，即善始善终。它的关键是“终”的时机和方式。顺利抽身退出要比顺利地进入时更难，因为山顶很美，因为下山的时候人一般都比较疲惫。
　　“滚动的石头上不长青苔”，不下这座山便上不了那座山。人的一生会爬无数的山。每一座山都是那样的别致，但没有一座山真的值得你永远地留下来。
　　影响引退的一个因素是贪恋，另一个因素是过分执著。对于人生利益，任何一个人都不可过分执著。所谓不过分执著，就是不偏执于某一个方面，某一种欲望，某一种企图，某一种目的，某一种过程。任何偏执都可能使人失去中肯的判断，从而错过了美景，贻误了人生。
5 输什么也不能输了心情
　　“你不可能因为给人一个微笑而丧失什么，因为它永远会再回来”。东西怎么出去，就会怎么回来。没有人不喜欢微笑。
　　但问题是使人微笑的事物往往不在身边，而令你烦躁、不安的事物却往往挥之不去。不能与自己喜欢的人和事在一起，是许多人不快乐的根本原因，因为你没有快乐的来源。
    曾经有段日子，我很惆怅，我喜欢的女孩不在乎我，我精心做的稿子被改来改去，我的身体也出了问题，感冒不时地光顾我，我的生活一塌糊涂。这时我的好朋友对我说：“输什么也不能输了心情，有些事情放了吧”。我决定改变。我不再找那个女孩，那篇稿子我立即投往别处，我也告别了一度懒散而无规律的生活，每天开始打球和跑步。结果，我的身体变得健美起来，我的那篇稿子很快被发表，而且还得了奖，我不再“在乎”了的那个女孩开始在乎起了我……
    一个人或事能令你不舒服是一定有着什么原因的，有的原因要过很久你才有可能知道，而有些原因你永远都不会知道，但这些都并不重要，重要的是它使你不舒服，他会影响你的心情，影响到你的判断，也影响到你的时间。
    给别人一个重新认识你的机会，给自己一个认识更广阔世界的机会，有什么不好？

钻石宝藏100多年前，美国费城的6个高中生向他们仰慕已久的一位博学多才的牧师请求：“先生，您肯教我们读书吗？我们想上大学，可是我们没钱。我们中学快毕业了，有一定的学识，您肯教教我们吗？”
这位牧师名叫R·康惠尔，他答应教这6个贫家子弟。同时他又暗自思忖：“一定还会有许多年轻人没钱上大学，他们想学习但付不起学费。我应该为这样的年轻人办一所大学。”
于是，他开始为筹建大学募捐。当时建一所大学大概要花150万美元。
康惠尔四处奔走，在各地演讲了5年，恳求大学为出身贫穷但有志于学的年轻人捐钱。出乎他意料的是，5年的辛苦筹募到的钱还不足1000美元。
康惠尔深感悲伤，情绪低落。当他走向教堂准备下礼拜的演说词时，低头沉思他发现教室周围的草枯黄得东倒西歪。他便问园丁：“为什么这里的草长得不如别的教堂周围的草呢？”
园丁抬起头来望着牧师回答说：“噢，我猜想你眼中觉得这地方的草长得不好，主要是因为你把这些草和别的草相比较的缘故。看来，我们常常是看到别人美丽的草地，希望别人的草地就是我们自己的，却很少去整治自家的草地。”

但是，当他听说要是有块土地的底下埋着钻石的话，他只要有一块钻石就可以富得难以想象。于是，农夫把自己的地卖了，离家出走，四处寻找可以发现钻石的地方。农夫走向遥远的异国他乡，然而却从未能发现钻石，最后，他囊空如洗。一天晚上，他在一个海滩自杀身亡。
真是无巧不成书！那个买下这个农夫的土地的人在散步时，无意中发现了一块异样的石头，他拾起来一看，它晶光闪闪，反射出光芒。他仔细察看，发现这是一块钻石。这样，就在农夫卖掉的这块土地上，新主人发现了从未被人发现的最大的钻石宝藏。
这个故事是发人深省的，康惠尔写道：财富不是仅凭奔走四方去发现的，它属于自己去挖掘的人，只属于依靠自己的土地的人，只属于相信自己能力的人。

It's that time of year again: Final exams. Are you taking (or giving) a cumulative final exam? From a cognitive psychologist's perspective, you should be: Cumulative finals may not be fun, but they can significantly enhance long-term learning.
The spacing effectCumulative exams take advantage of the spacing effect If you have already studied something, studying it again after a delay can produce a huge amount of learning. (Studying the same information without letting time pass in between produces much less learning.) A cumulative exam means that in December you're going to have to restudy whatever you learned back in September. Because that involves spacing, you're going to learn a lot from doing it.
Spaced learning is especially important for long-term learning. If you want to remember something for the short term, maybe just for your exam in a few days, spaced learning will help some. If you want to learn something for life, spaced learning is absolutely crucial. Research shows that the longer you want to remember something, the more you should space your learning.

Repetition
When scientists study spaced learning, they hold the number of times you'll study constant. But a cumulative exam actually makes you spend additional time studying material from earlier in the year. Studying more obviously helps, and some studies show that it particularly helps in the long term. Thus, cumulative exams offer the advantages spaced repetitions and more repetitions.
Don't let your intuition fool youWe all know that studying more is good, right? Well, yes. But it turns out that people often underestimate the value of repeated studying. There seem to be at least three reasons for this misperception.
First, people don't recognize the benefits of spacing (they often think it has negative effects). Second, people are biased to think their memories won't change much in the future--so they underestimate the benefits of future studying. And third, people think that once they can recall something, they know it. And maybe they do in the short term, but just because you can recall it now, that doesn't mean you won't have forgotten it later. Thus, people think studying something they "know" is a waste of time, when in reality studying it more (or, actually, testing themselves on it) can have enormous long-term value.
Improving EducationIn a perfect world, Bio 101 students would have to take a cumulative Bio 101 exams a year after completing the course. There'd be two advantages of doing so: The first is that even small amounts of spaced study can produce long-lasting learning. And second, if teachers geared their teaching toward longer-term learning, they might do things differently in ways that would make education more effective.

Dear Irene,

It is hard to know if lengthy silences and withdrawals by friends are because they are trying to dump you or because they are busy and a little neglectful. I especially grapple with this at birthdays and at Christmas time, often continuing to send cards or emails because I assume the best---that my friends are just busy.

But when I am always the initiator, does this mean I am refusing to accept that they don't really want to continue the friendship? Is it better to assume the best and send occasional missives? How does one know?

Dear Becca,

What a great question! You really get to the crux of the ambiguity of many friendships, which is something that everyone grapples with from time to time. Just as the beginning and ending of friendships are often fuzzy, it's sometimes hard to gauge what is going on with a friend mid-stream, particularly if you haven't spoken to her for a while.

People's lives change over time and sometimes the threads that connect them becomes frayed and weak. Thus, many relationships we thought would last forever turn out to be transient----and friends, even very close ones, slip in and out of our lives for a variety of reasons. Other friendships are continuous but change in intensity and frequency of contact.

As you suggest, lack of communication may mean any number of things: that the person is engaged with or overwhelmed with other people and/or responsibilities (e.g. work, family, etc); that the person needs more alone time for herself; or that the person is either purposely or unconsciously withdrawing from you.

Being a good friend entails being sensitive to the needs of another individual and to the natural vicissitudes of friendship. Unless you have a concrete reason to think otherwise, you should always assume that lack of communication has more to do with the other person than it does with you. Sending periodic emails, short notes or cards to acknowledge her birthday, or holiday greeting cards are thoughtful and non-obtrusive ways to tell the other person you're thinking of her.

But if there is no pick-up on the other end---for example, your friend never initiates or reciprocates after you reached out three or so times---it makes sense to check in more directly to find out what's going on. You can either call her, offer to get together, or send her an email asking if everything is okay in her life and between the two of you.

In most cases, your friend's response will allay your concerns. If she doesn't respond or answers in some vague way, allow some time to pass and try again. If there is still no positive response after that, it's safe to assume that your friend is withdrawing or at least needs a break and you need to accept that.

Distance Matters: Surviving a long-distance friendship

Dear Friendship Doctor,

I've been drifting apart from two friends over the past few years. In the first instance, I felt abandoned after working hard to maintain a long-distance friendship. When I finally confronted her a year ago, she swore I was still her best friend. I plunged back into correspondence and calls but she didn't reciprocate.

In the other instance, I call every month or two, and visit once or twice a year, a level of commitment that feels comfortable for me. But she imagines me her best friend, and talks about seeing me more often (monthly?) and phoning me more often. Yet, she hasn't scheduled more visits, and we remain more acquaintances than friends, which is fine by me.

In both cases, I've come to recognize that we've changed as people, and don't share the same interests, priorities or outlooks on life. If we met for the first time now, as adults, we might not become fast friends at all. At the same time, I value the ongoing connection to my past - so I don't want to drop them altogether.

So my question is: What are the right words to use to signal that a friendship has changed? I've known both women longer than my husband and certainly longer than many romantic relationships, but those relationships had more definite closure or clarity. Isn't it healthy to talk things out?

This question has become more urgent because both friends will soon
celebrate birthdays. In the case of friend #1, our last contact was an unanswered email from me to her more than six months ago. I plan to send her a gift and a note, wish her well, and let her know I'm still here and look forward to a phase of life when our friendship might be closer again. Will the note seem like a fresh accusation or complaint against her?

The case of friend #2 is more complicated. We're both celebrating milestone birthdays this year (and it isn't age 21) so we're taking a trip together. I travel often so an overnight trip without my husband is no big deal. For her, it's the first time she'll "cut loose" in a decade or more. While she is ecstatically excited, I'm feeling anxious that we're not as compatible now as we once were. I certainly want to go but I plan to be myself, which means enjoying a quiet glass of wine after dinner rather than hitting a nightclub. How can I stay true to myself without wounding her and fatally damaging the friendship, and how can we both emerge from this trip with realistic expectations of our friendship?

In both cases, it's a question of how to acknowledge change. The prospect of a written or spoken declaration seems to give the situation more finality than I want, but to fail to acknowledge reality seems dishonest. Suggestions?

Dear Chelsea,

Moving is high on the list of stressors. Understandably, it's tough to move away from close friends after your lives have become intertwined. Sometimes we forget that moving can be just as onerous for the friends who are left behind.

While you hope you'll be best friends forever, the reality is that distance matters. Even when two friends are tied together emotionally at the hip, it is simply less convenient to be friends from afar. Distance can compromise even the best of relationships.

In the case of Friend #1, your friend was probably being honest when she said she still feels close. Yet, the friendship was transformed by the move and may never be the same. When you "confronted" her, you acknowledged that the relationship had changed. (I don't like the term "confront" because it sounds accusatory and these are really no-fault changes).

Since you value the friendship the way it is, especially the shared memories, and you want to remain friends, it's fine to send her a birthday gift. But do not send a gift in the hope that it will draw you closer together!

In the case of Friend # 2, she's found out it's logistically difficult (in terms of time, money, and commitments) to schedule frequent visits. After all, she's immersed in a new life, in a new place, with new people. Yet, you both seem to care enough about the relationship to have planned this girlfriends' getaway to celebrate your friendship.

Before you pack your bags, talk about your plans and expectations for the trip so you're both on the same page to help avoid any landmines or letdowns while you are there. If the trip works out well, it will offer an opportunity to talk more intimately about your friendship expectations, face-to-face, and perhaps to plan a ritual for future birthdays.

Yes, it's always murky to try to define the beginning or end of a friendship---or to even understand the transitions in the middle. It's easier with marriages and unions where there are legal obligations and divorce decrees. When it comes to friendships, changes in life circumstances often require us to renegotiate terms. There is no "right" way to do this. It can be implicit or explicit--- "right" depends on the people, the situation, and how they feel.

It's hard to lose two close friends to moves and not feel abandoned but guard against feeling hurt and defensive. You didn't ask---but you probably need to check your inventory of nearby friends to make sure you have enough of those too.

Almost everyone has trouble concentrating sometimes; it is a fact of life. From time to time, the stress of daily life combined with distractions in the environment can really affect one's attention to detail. Like many human traits, all people fall somewhere along a continuum from easily able to concentrate to unable to concentrate for any considerable period of time. A certain amount of distraction is normal, but if you find yourself unable to achieve your goals, are unhappy with your performance on a regular basis, and seem to be fighting a losing battle against your inattention, you may be suffering from a condition called Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). The results of the test are not intended to diagnose you; rather, they should be considered food for thought. If you score extremely low, you might benefit from seeking a professional opinion.

Many people think of Attention Deficit Disorder as a childhood issue, but in fact, there is mounting evidence that not all children "grow out of" ADD. There is always room for improvement however, so you could benefit from reading the tips in the advice section.

This test assesses problems often associated with ADD. Although you show almost no symptoms, it might be useful to educate yourself about the condition because you might come across people who suffer from it. ADD is a common disorder in children and in recent years adults have been diagnosed with increasing frequency as well. Adults with ADD are often frustrated by the gap between their ability, intelligence, and skills and their actual performance. They are held back by their attention problems. Diagnosis in these individuals is important because they can then begin to learn techniques and/or get the proper medication in order to become more productive. It is also important because many individuals with ADD self-medicate with alcohol or other drugs, and this can have an even more adverse effect on their lives.

For Adults suffering from attention problems

•Take advantage of your productive moments. Get as much done as you can. Don't try to suppress the creative, unusual ideas you come up with during those times. Try to understand what brought on your productivity. Look at what it takes for you to be able to concentrate, then schedule work requiring lots of attention at that time.

• Get rid of clutter where you do your important work. This sounds easier said than done, especially if there are piles and piles of stuff in your work area, but working in a distraction-free environment will increase concentration by reducing extraneous stimulation to the brain.

• Keep your brain clutter-free as well. If there is something on your mind that is distracting you, take a few minutes to talk to someone about it, write it down in a journal or otherwise think it through. Then put it out of your mind as much as possible until later.

• Set goals for yourself. Break them down into small, manageable pieces so that you can feel that you have accomplished something even after the smallest task. They'll add up. Reward yourself for successful completion of large goals.

• Think about letdowns not as a reflection of the past or the future, but as a momentary failing. If you make a mistake or don't do well, it doesn't mean that you will always perform poorly. And by all means, don't go into new endeavors expecting failure, just because you have had a hard time in the past. People with attention problems can be very successful when they are interested in what they are doing.

• Exercise. Get rid of some of your excess energy.

• Time management is key. For important events, your work, or other times where you HAVE to be on time, plan ahead. Pack your lunch, iron your clothes and prepare everything you need the day before. Get ready far before you have to leave.

• Make lists - but make them manageable. Prioritize what really needs to be done and do it right away before you can get sidetracked. Don't beat yourself up if you get distracted; just get right back to what you are supposed to be doing.

• Make a routine for yourself. You'll be less likely to forget important things if they become habitual (e.g. put your keys on a hook by the door every time you enter your home so you always know where they are). Following routines at night ("a bedtime ritual") can help you get in the mood to sleep, possibly preventing you from thinking too much when you should be sleeping. Routines can also be useful in work or schoolwork. Once you have accomplished the essential tasks for the day, you can feel free to be more adventurous, to let your mind wander, and to run with the creative ideas you have.

For those who have been formally diagnosed: (If you haven't but you sense that these problems are negatively affecting your life, see a psychologist).

• Get informed. Find out all of your options - medical or behavioral.

• Meet the challenge head on. There is a good chance for improvement but it takes determination. Research shows that treatment outcome is highly influenced by the individual's attitude.

• Combine treatments. Drug therapy combined with psychosocial interventions can be especially helpful.

• Learn to live with the ADD. That doesn't mean you should feel that the condition is out of your control - the symptoms can be very well managed. However, finding ways to recognize the subtle signs and learning to cope with them can do wonders for a sense of control and morale.

• Find an ADD coach to motivate you and help you get organized. They are familiar with the unique needs of people with ADD and can be very helpful.

• Embrace your ADD. Many successful people suffer from ADD and still thrive. Many creative, intelligent individuals in history suffered from similar "symptoms" which were just part of what made them shine. Common words used to describe people with ADD include energetic, enthusiastic, creative, intuitive, curious and more. These are all great traits to have.

• Do not use ADD as a crutch. You should take responsibility if you make a mistake, whether or not ADD caused it. You DO have control over your actions. For instance, if you miss a deadline at work, tell yourself that you should have started earlier, rather than that ADD caused you to be late. This might help you behave differently the next time around.

• Seek social support from others with the same disorder. It will make you feel better to know that you are not alone, and they may be able to share some tips with you. There are many message boards throughout the web, or check out support groups in your area.
